3 things I learned using artificial intelligence generated images to promote naturism

3 things I learned using artificial intelligence generated images to promote naturism. Artificial intelligence generated images to promote naturism are a tool for naturist publishing particularly online. Artificial intelligence has burst on to the technology  scene and by all accounts will significantly impact our daily lives moving forward. Some naturists have begun to explore some of of the implications both benefits and challenges for naturism in general and naturism online specifically. Doug Hickok has a good piece titled Rise of the Machines in the December 2022 issue of the Naturist Education Foundation Newsletter. This is where I first heard about using artificial intelligence to promote naturism.I want to share with you 3 things I learned using artificial intelligence to generate images to promote naturism.

AI image generation is in its infancy

There are many things AI can do now, but I believe it is still only in its infancy. AI image generation machines are still learning. I learned when entering a prompt to generate an image it may take several rounds for the image generator to figure out what I am looking for. Basically I am training to understand how to get the best result to my prompt. When I get an image that is close telling the AI image generator that I want to see more like that gives it a better idea of what kind of image I want. The other thing that AI image generators seem to be learning is the nuances of the human body especially the extremities. Faces and  feet don’t look normal. Faces, I understand. Maybe they are trying to avoid being too realistic. But feet and hands are definitely challenging. The fingers and toes often appear mangled and distorted or cut off altogether. At times it seems some body parts are intentionally distorted. See the range of examples below.

AI image generation has a nudity bias

As one writer suggested AI image generators have a nudity bias. Simply put they do not handle requests for images with nudity, even it it’s a non sexual activity like walking swimming or running. In fact, if you write a prompt for the average AI image generator using the words nude or naked you are likely to get no generated images returned.
Anytime I’ve tried something similar it always gets rejected as nude, naked or even unclothed gets flagged as inappropriate. - Instagram follower
It’s also just as likely you would get crooked person or an image distorted so as not to look like a human body.  I am sure there are valid reasons for this, like AI being used to generate pornography, but it makes things more complicated to get decent naturist images.

Another bias specific to nudism and naturism is an age bias. Images generated with prompts using these words overwhelmingly picture older people. This is true even if the prompts explicitly calls for young or young adult naturists. This may well be accurate based on how the engines have be taught but it still reflects an annoying bias.

AI image generating engines are  different

One important thing to be aware of is all the AI image generation implementations  are different. They are all based on popular algorithm engines like Chat GPT Midjourney and DALL-E (Stable Diffusion). However, each may have a different front end implementation and specific quirks based on its learning model. There may also be restrictions and limitations on the acceptable words in prompts as previously shared. One thing the all have in common is the process. It is test to image. Basically it works like this type a descriptive set of words, (more descriptive the better) of the image you want to generate. Choose a style and put the generator to work. The number and variety of styles differs from generator to generator. The number of resulting images and accessibility also varies.

It is too soon to pick a favorite from among all the different AI image generators, but one of the least restrictive for naturist purposes is Neural Love  AI Art Generator It was the first I tried and used for this article. Neural Love is based on the Stable Diffusion algorithm and is technically free. It can generated to twenty images based on a wide variety of styles in three different sizes in one pass. However, any resulting images considered NSFW (not safe for work) read containing nudity is hidden behind a privacy wall. To access those results a privacy checkbox must be checked and the prompts rerun. Using the privacy feature requires credits that must be purchased. Smart business model, but may be limiting feature for naturist use.

Conclusion

Not everyone likes the idea of using artificial intelligence generated images to promote naturism. Traditional medium artists may be particularly concerned. Truth is this is not going away and while there are real concerns, AI generated imagery for promoting naturism is a solid potential. Publications often struggle to find illustrative naturist images of real people that are affordable to license. Using images of individuals without permission is unacceptable. So, I will go one step further and say the potential is great. If, and it’s a big if, the AI engines lose their nudity bias. Otherwise the only unacceptable option (for us anyway) is using the merging AI porn image generators. What do you think?
