There is an emerging trend on social media platforms particularly ones who purposes to be free speech advocates like twitter. We have reported on purges of naturist and nudist accounts on Twitter and other social media before. But something has changed. Notable naturist accounts with large numbers of followers have been suspended or deleted. The most recent being the Bare Oaks Naturist Park account. Others like the Naturist Living Show podcast , history account Naturist Vintage, travel blogger Meandering Naturist Dan, the French Naturist Federation, and several regional accounts for the American Association for Nude Recreation, naturist media company Clothes Free TV , travel club Rocky Mountain Naturist Club have all been suspended according to recent accounts. Others we have noted include British naturist Emma James Sockoff, nude yoga instructor Doria Yoga, musician and bare body freedom advocate Ton Dou.

On the surface it might seem like the usual anti-nude efforts of individual who report naturist social media because their personal opinions about social nudity online. Many equate it to pornography. The EFF thinks that the free speech advocate social media are using a distorted expression of free speech as a cover for promoting their views and negating others. Point in fact the rationale being suggested for the permanent Bare Oaks suspension is the violation of not of Twitter rules but a political intention mirrored on free speech social media to eradicate child exploitation. Bare Oaks has recently focused on family naturism included an image of a family including children enjoying clothes free time together. This has been suggested as the reason for the account suspension.
It is important to say at this point that eradicating the scourge of child exploitation is a warranted and laudable goal. However, it would naive to ignore political overtones often attach to that goal. The safety of children been the rallying cry for those who want to prevent family naturist event and activities. It is also been at the forefront of political conspiracy theories expressed by many who champion free speech.
The other factor we have long believed is the lack of value naturist accounts have for social media platforms. One Reddittor said in response to th Bare Oaks suspension it’s all about monetization. Most social media platforms struggle to make money, this is true of even FB that has lost millions in recent months. These platforms seek to attract accounts that in turn attract advertisers. The honest truth is naturist accounts rarely if ever provide that value.
Bottom line is there are forces at working determining who gets to be able to express themselves on social media and what they are able to share. None of those forces whether it’s the free speech activists or the corporate money folks are particularly aligned with the naturist ideal. The current nude body focus on nudism online is also at odds with the power brokers who are shaping the social media landscape.
What is the solution? There is no quick fix in this writers opinion. However, it has been suggested that national and international naturist groups should take a greater role in engaging these social media platforms. I think this is the best course of action. Individual nudist content creators don’t have enough cache to make a difference and could easily to branded as part of the problem. Groups like the Naturist Action Committee, British Naturism and some members of the International Naturist Federation like the Spanish Association have a history of engaging non naturist politicians and governmental officials to address issues related to naturist rights. The current president of the International Naturist Federation is none other than the owner of Bare Oaks, Stéphane Deschênes.
