Synopsis: On a trip to her hometown, workaholic Ally (Alison Brie (star of the Netflix series GLOW)) reminisces with her first love Sean (Jay Ellis star of Insecure on HBO), and starts to question everything about the person she's become. Things only get more confusing when she meets Sean's fiancé, Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons), who reminds her of the person she used to be.

Someone I Used to Know - is whimsical dramedy from Amazon starring Alison Brie and Jay Ellis and directed by Dave Franco. Just in time for Valentine’s Day it premieres  Friday, February 10th, on Amazon Prime Video. “Somebody I Used to Know” is a story choices, finding yourself and the freedom to be use.

Bonding over nudity

In case anyone reading is expecting scene upon scene of nude bodies this is not a nudist movie. It does feature a couple of scenes of female and group nudity. The first involves the female leads streaking across a golf course after "bonding over nudity". The second scene was filmed on location at Serenity Mountain Retreat..

What gives this movie its naturist interest is they way that simple nudity and nudism (using the language used) is presented. Frankly it is one of the best depicted of simple nonsexual nudity and nudism I have come across in a mainstream commercial film.

In the promo tour for the film Brie spoke with Roger Ebert about wanting to normalize simple nudity. Brie spoke  with Ebert about her own comfort with simple non sexual nudity.
I love representations of nudity in film that are not over-sexualized, and in this movie, it also made a lot of sense to incorporate it. Somehow nudity was the perfect metaphor for Ally’s journey.

Nonsexual nudity

In this regard they achieved their goal. The closing scene shot at Serenity Mountain Retreat the oldest established nudist venue in the U.S. west. The scene well done without any salaciousness and conveys the power of nudism/naturism to unlock the freedom to be yourself. The story within the story is an interview by a Brie's character (Ally)  of a woman at the Serenity nudist community. Brie draws on her own experiences with non sexual nudity to support the exceptionally done scene. In the scene the crew get naked to film the interview. I wonder how much that reflects what actually happened on the location set?

Beyond the naturist interest the rest of the movie pretty well done. The quality is on par with what is expected from an Amazon Prime made for T.V. movie. The acting is top tier Brie and Ellis do justice to the lead characters, and carry a slightly cliche script. There are a few sex interrupted scenes featuring the lead characters mother and her boyfriend thrown in for cringe comedic effect. They get the film an R rating.

If I have anything to quibble about is the film really felt like a made for tv movie almost an episode of a tv show as everything seems hurried to get wrapped up at the end. Still it makes for light enjoyable Valentine's Day viewing as romantic comedies/dramedies go. If you haven’t finalized plans for Valentine's Day yet this is worth considering as an addition.
